Nasi Briyani Lembaga Tabung Haji

On a regular day, the walkway in front of the Lembaga Tabung Haji building on Jalan Tun Razak is fairly quiet. Every Friday afternoon, however, it transforms into a unique food bazaar filled with a bustling crowd, who are there for Friday prayers at the mosque. There are stalls selling burgers, kebabs, and of course, nasi kandar and nasi briyani.

My first experience with the food there started after a swimming session at G-Tower’s Element Gym on a long Friday lunch break. This stall is stationed located to the right side if you’re facing the building, and it is the one that is usually the busiest as well.

There are usually at least some two dozen dishes to choose from, with most of them being spicy - just the way I like it! There are lamb, beef curry, rendang, brinjal, honey chicken, fried chicken, curry chicken, fried kembung fish, fried egg, hard-boiled egg, various types of sambal, bitter gourd, and even begedil. The food is very delicious, and best of all, the prices are reasonable as well.

For example, a packet of nasi briyani with a hard-boiled egg, fried chicken drumstick, bitter gourd, and a huge chunk of eggplant with sambal costs RM9, with a papadom thrown in as well. I particularly love the eggplant, which very juicy, spicy and full of flavour.

I suspect that if you get there really late, say around 3.00pm, sometimes the owner will throw in a really great deal as well. Once, I had some beef tripe, fried fish egg and long beans with nasi briyani for less than RM5! If you’re up for some delicious no-frill nasi briyani on a Friday afternoon, this is definitely a place to check out.

They offer a “dine-in” option as well, though there won’t be any chairs or tables by the stall. The food will simply come on a plate instead of a styrofoam container
